Mount Kailash & Lake Manasarovar Pilgrimage Tour – Overall Overview

Mount Kailash & Lake Manasarovar Pilgrimage Tour

The Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar Pilgrimage Tour is one of the world's most extraordinary spiritual journeys, combining breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, ancient cultures, and deep religious significance. Located in the remote western region of the Tibetan Plateau, Mount Kailash (6,638 m / 21,778 ft) and Lake Manasarovar (4,590 m / 15,060 ft) have inspired pilgrims, explorers, monks, and adventure travelers for thousands of years.

This remarkable journey offers much more than a trek. It is a life-changing pilgrimage through the sacred lands of Tibet, where visitors experience spectacular mountain scenery, crystal-clear alpine lakes, centuries-old monasteries, high mountain passes, and one of the most revered spiritual destinations on Earth.

At Nepal Voyage Treks, we organize professionally guided Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar tours for international travelers, ensuring safe travel, comfortable accommodations, experienced guides, proper acclimatization, and unforgettable cultural experiences.

Mount Kailash – The Sacred Mountain

Mount Kailash stands majestically at 6,638 meters (21,778 feet) above sea level in Tibet's Ngari Prefecture. Unlike other Himalayan peaks, Mount Kailash has never been climbed because of its immense religious importance.

For over 2,000 years, it has been regarded as the spiritual center of the universe by four major religions:

Hinduism

Mount Kailash is believed to be the eternal home of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Hindus believe that Lord Shiva meditates on its summit, making the mountain the most sacred pilgrimage destination in Hinduism.

Buddhism

Tibetan Buddhists know Mount Kailash as Kang Rinpoche, meaning "Precious Snow Jewel." They believe it is the residence of Demchok (Chakrasamvara), representing supreme enlightenment and perfect wisdom.

Jainism

Jains believe the first Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva, attained liberation (moksha) near Mount Kailash, making it one of their holiest pilgrimage destinations.

Bon Religion

Followers of Tibet's ancient Bon religion consider Mount Kailash the spiritual center of the universe and the sacred mountain where their founder descended from heaven.

The Sacred Kailash Kora (Circumambulation)

One of the highlights of the journey is the famous Kailash Kora, a sacred 52-kilometer pilgrimage route around Mount Kailash.

Pilgrims walk around the mountain clockwise (except Bon followers who traditionally walk counter-clockwise) as an act of devotion.

The complete Kora usually takes 3 days.

Highest Point

  • Dolma La Pass: 5,630 meters (18,471 feet)

Crossing Dolma La is both physically demanding and spiritually meaningful. Tibetan Buddhists believe passing over the high pass symbolizes leaving behind past sins and beginning a new life.

Along the trail, trekkers encounter:

  • Ancient monasteries
  • Colorful prayer flags
  • Mani stone walls
  • Snow-covered peaks
  • Sacred meditation caves
  • Himalayan wildlife
  • Glaciers and alpine valleys

Every step around Kailash is considered an act of merit by pilgrims from around the world.

Lake Manasarovar – The Sacred Lake

Located just south of Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar lies at an altitude of 4,590 meters (15,060 feet).

It is the world's highest freshwater lake of its size and is considered one of the holiest lakes on Earth.

Its brilliant turquoise waters reflect Mount Kailash, creating one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Himalayas.

According to Hindu scriptures, the lake was first imagined in the mind of Lord Brahma before being created on Earth. The name "Manasarovar" comes from the Sanskrit words:

  • Manas = Mind
  • Sarovar = Lake

Meaning:

"The Lake Created by the Mind of Brahma."

Pilgrims believe bathing in the lake washes away the sins of many lifetimes and drinking its water brings spiritual purification and blessings.

Many visitors spend peaceful moments meditating, praying, or simply enjoying the silence of this extraordinary place.

Drive from Kathmandu (1,400 m) to Syabrubesi (1,550 m)

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Kathmandu, your exciting journey to the sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar begins. Our professional guide from Nepal Voyage Treks will meet you at the hotel, and you will travel in a comfortable private vehicle. Depending on the size of your group, transportation will be arranged by private car, jeep, Hiace van, minibus, or tourist coach to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

The scenic drive follows the Prithvi Highway before joining the Trishuli Highway, gradually leaving the busy Kathmandu Valley behind. As you travel north, you will pass through charming hillside villages, green terraced farmland, dense forests, rushing rivers, waterfalls, and traditional rural settlements. The route offers spectacular views of the Trishuli River, one of Nepal's major Himalayan rivers, while the surrounding landscape showcases the country's diverse natural beauty. On clear days, you may enjoy distant views of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), and several snow-capped peaks of the Langtang Himalayan Range.

The road is mostly paved, although some sections become narrow and winding as you approach the Rasuwa District. During the monsoon season, occasional rough sections may be encountered due to ongoing road maintenance. The journey covers approximately 122 kilometers and usually takes 7 to 8 hours, including several comfortable stops for refreshments, lunch, photography, and rest.

Along the route, you will experience Nepal's remarkable biodiversity. The hills are covered with forests of pine, oak, rhododendron, bamboo, and alder trees. Wildlife commonly seen in the area includes Himalayan langur monkeys, rhesus macaques, barking deer, Himalayan eagles, kingfishers, bulbuls, and colorful butterflies. During spring, the forests are beautifully decorated with blooming rhododendrons, Nepal's national flower.

Although this is a driving day rather than a trekking day, it serves as an important introduction to the Himalayan landscape before entering Tibet. The gradual increase in elevation from 1,400 meters in Kathmandu to 1,550 meters in Syabrubesi allows your body to begin adapting to higher altitudes while you enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery.

Upon arrival in Syabrubesi, a small mountain town located near the Nepal–China border, you will check into a comfortable local lodge. After some time to relax, you may explore the village, observe the local Tamang culture, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before dinner. In the evening, your guide will provide a briefing about the next day's border crossing into Tibet and answer any remaining questions.

Drive from Syabrubesi (1,550 m) to Kerung (Gyirong) (2,700 m) via Rasuwagadhi Border

After an early breakfast at your lodge in Syabrubesi, your journey continues towards the Nepal–China border at Rasuwagadhi. This is one of the most exciting days of the pilgrimage, as you leave Nepal behind and enter the spectacular Tibetan Plateau. The morning drive follows the beautiful Bhote Koshi River through steep mountain valleys surrounded by lush forests, waterfalls, and traditional Tamang villages. The winding mountain road offers magnificent views of deep gorges, rocky cliffs, and the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

After driving approximately 15 kilometres from Syabrubesi, you arrive at Rasuwagadhi Border (1,850 m), the official immigration point between Nepal and Tibet. Here, our Nepalese team will assist you with the departure formalities before you cross the Friendship Bridge on foot into Tibet (China). On the Chinese side, your Tibetan guide and driver will warmly welcome you and assist with immigration, customs procedures, and luggage inspection. Once all formalities are completed, you will board your comfortable private vehicle and begin the scenic drive to Kerung (Gyirong).

The road climbs steadily through a spectacular river gorge before entering the beautiful Gyirong Valley, one of the greenest regions in southern Tibet. Unlike the dry Tibetan Plateau farther north, Kerung is surrounded by dense forests, alpine meadows, crystal-clear rivers, and snow-covered mountains. The journey provides an excellent opportunity to witness the dramatic transition from Nepal's subtropical hills to Tibet's unique Himalayan landscapes.

As the road ascends, the vegetation gradually changes from broadleaf forests to pine, fir, juniper, birch, and alpine shrubs. During spring and early summer, colourful wildflowers bloom across the hillsides, creating beautiful scenery. Wildlife found in this region includes Himalayan blue sheep, musk deer, Himalayan marmots, pikas, Tibetan foxes, Himalayan griffon vultures, golden eagles, and numerous species of mountain birds. Although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, the Gyirong Valley is well known for its rich biodiversity compared with other parts of Tibet.

Throughout the journey, travellers enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks that form the natural border between Nepal and Tibet. On clear days, distant views of Shishapangma (8,027 m), Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, and several unnamed snow-covered peaks can be seen towering above the valleys.

The drive from the border to Kerung covers approximately 30 kilometres and usually takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on road conditions and immigration procedures. Although the driving distance is relatively short, today's gradual ascent from 1,550 metres to 2,700 metres is important for acclimatization. Upon arrival in Kerung, you will check into a comfortable local hotel and have sufficient time to rest after lunch. In the afternoon, your guide may lead a short acclimatization walk around the town, allowing your body to adapt naturally to the higher altitude while enjoying the peaceful Tibetan atmosphere.

Kerung is a modern border town that offers comfortable accommodation, restaurants, shops, and stunning mountain scenery. The fresh mountain air, beautiful surroundings, and slower pace of life make it an ideal place to begin your Tibetan adventure. In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner before your guide provides information about altitude awareness, health precautions, and the exciting journey ahead across the Tibetan Plateau.

Acclimatization Day in Kerung (Gyirong) – Explore the Beautiful Gyirong Valley (2,700 m)

Today is an important acclimatization day in Kerung, allowing your body to adjust naturally to the increasing altitude before continuing towards the higher Tibetan Plateau. Proper acclimatization greatly reduces the risk of altitude sickness and helps ensure a safer and more enjoyable journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. The easy walk allows your body to adapt gradually to the elevation while providing magnificent opportunities for photography and relaxation.

During the excursion, you may visit a traditional Tibetan village where local families continue to practice centuries-old customs and traditions. Friendly villagers, colorful prayer flags, spinning prayer wheels, and beautifully decorated Buddhist chortens create a peaceful atmosphere that reflects the deep spiritual heritage of Tibet. If time permits, you may also visit a nearby Buddhist monastery, where monks perform daily prayers and visitors can observe traditional Tibetan religious life.

Throughout the day, the surrounding landscape offers panoramic views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks, deep forested valleys, and crystal-clear mountain streams. During spring and summer, the hillsides are decorated with blooming rhododendrons, wildflowers, and alpine plants, while forests are home to a variety of Himalayan wildlife. Lucky visitors may spot Himalayan blue sheep grazing on distant slopes, playful Himalayan marmots, Tibetan foxes, or soaring Himalayan griffon vultures riding the mountain winds. Numerous species of colorful birds also inhabit the forests surrounding Kerung.

Your guide will also explain the importance of hydration, slow walking, and proper altitude management before entering the higher regions of western Tibet. During the afternoon, you will have free time to rest, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, organize your trekking equipment, or explore the small local market. Kerung's comfortable hotels, fresh mountain air, and welcoming atmosphere provide the perfect environment to prepare both physically and mentally for the adventure ahead.

In the evening, gather with your fellow travelers for dinner while your guide provides further information about the next day's drive across the vast Tibetan Plateau toward Saga. Drive from Kerung (Gyirong) to Saga (4,640 m)

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Kerung, you will begin one of the most spectacular scenic drives of your Mount Kailash pilgrimage. Leaving the beautiful green valleys of Gyirong behind, the road gradually ascends onto the vast Tibetan Plateau, where breathtaking landscapes, snow-capped mountains, pristine lakes, and endless grasslands create an unforgettable travel experience.

Today's journey is an important stage of the expedition as you gain significant altitude while travelling across one of the highest plateaus in the world. The drive follows a well-maintained highway through remote valleys, high mountain passes, wide-open plains, and traditional Tibetan settlements. Along the way, you will cross several mountain ridges decorated with colourful Buddhist prayer flags, where local pilgrims stop to offer prayers for a safe journey.

As you climb higher, the scenery changes dramatically. Dense forests gradually disappear, giving way to alpine meadows, rolling grasslands, and the vast open landscapes of western Tibet. Large herds of yaks, sheep, and goats graze peacefully across the plateau, while Tibetan nomads continue their traditional lifestyle in black yak-hair tents scattered across the grasslands.

On clear days, today's drive offers magnificent panoramic views of some of the Himalayan region's highest peaks, including Shishapangma (8,027 m), the only mountain over 8,000 metres located entirely within Tibet. You may also enjoy distant views of Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lakpa, and several unnamed snow-covered peaks stretching across the Nepal–Tibet border.

The Tibetan Plateau is also famous for its remarkable wildlife. During the journey, you may encounter wild Tibetan yaks, Kiang (Tibetan wild ass), blue sheep, Himalayan marmots, Tibetan gazelles, and occasionally Tibetan foxes. Bird lovers may spot black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese, golden eagles, and Himalayan griffon vultures soaring high above the plateau. Wildlife sightings depend on the season and weather conditions but add a memorable element to today's drive.

The road is mostly smooth asphalt with occasional gravel sections due to seasonal maintenance. Your experienced Tibetan driver will make several stops along the route for photographs, rest breaks, and lunch, allowing you to fully appreciate the stunning landscapes and fresh mountain air. Because today's altitude increases considerably, your guide will encourage everyone to walk slowly during stops, drink plenty of water, and monitor their health to support proper acclimatization.

After travelling approximately 230 kilometres over 6 to 7 hours, you will arrive in Saga, a lively Tibetan town situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo). Saga serves as an important gateway for pilgrims travelling to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. The town offers comfortable hotels, restaurants, shops, banks, pharmacies, and basic medical facilities, making it an ideal overnight stop before continuing farther west.

After checking into your hotel, you will have time to relax, take a short walk around the town if you feel comfortable, and enjoy dinner with your fellow travellers. Your guide will provide a briefing about the next day's journey to the sacred Lake Manasarovar and answer any questions about altitude, weather, and travel conditions.

Drive from Saga (4,640 m) to the Sacred Lake Manasarovar (4,590 m)

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Saga, you will begin one of the most inspiring days of the entire Mount Kailash pilgrimage. Today's journey takes you deep into the heart of western Tibet, across the immense Tibetan Plateau, towards the sacred Lake Manasarovar, one of the holiest lakes in the world and an important pilgrimage destination for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the Bon religion.

Leaving Saga behind, the road follows the wide Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo) River before gradually crossing vast open plains, rolling hills, and high mountain passes. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the landscape transforms into an endless panorama of snow-covered mountains, turquoise lakes, golden grasslands, and remote nomadic settlements.

Throughout today's drive, travellers are surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the Tibetan Plateau. Herds of wild yaks, Tibetan sheep, goats, and grazing horses can often be seen roaming freely across the grasslands. Traditional Tibetan nomads continue their centuries-old lifestyle, living in black yak-hair tents and moving with their livestock according to the seasons.

As you continue westward, the magnificent Himalayan skyline becomes increasingly impressive. On clear days, you may enjoy distant views of Mount Gurla Mandhata (7,694 m), one of western Tibet's highest mountains. As you approach the holy lake, the unforgettable sight of Mount Kailash (6,638 m) rising above the horizon creates one of the most emotional moments of the pilgrimage. Many pilgrims offer prayers, meditate, or simply pause in silence while enjoying their first view of this sacred mountain.

Upon arrival at Lake Manasarovar, you will have time to walk along its peaceful shoreline and admire the crystal-clear turquoise water reflecting the surrounding Himalayan peaks. According to Hindu tradition, the lake was created by Lord Brahma and is believed to purify the soul. Many pilgrims perform prayers, meditation, or collect holy water to take home. If weather and local regulations permit, you may also touch the sacred water or perform traditional religious rituals along the lakeshore.

The lake is famous not only for its spiritual significance but also for its exceptional natural beauty. During sunrise and sunset, the colours of the lake constantly change from deep blue to emerald green and brilliant turquoise. The peaceful atmosphere, fresh mountain air, and magnificent scenery make this one of the most memorable destinations in Tibet.

Tonight you will stay at a pilgrim guesthouse near the shores of Lake Manasarovar. Accommodation in this remote region is simple but clean and comfortable considering the high-altitude environment. The guesthouse provides a unique opportunity to spend the night close to one of the world's most sacred lakes, surrounded by complete silence and spectacular Himalayan scenery.

Rooms are generally arranged on a twin-sharing basis, although during busy pilgrimage seasons some guests may be accommodated in three- or four-bed rooms, depending on availability. Private rooms are very limited and cannot always be guaranteed. Most guesthouses offer warm blankets, pillows, and basic mattresses, but the facilities are considerably simpler than hotels in Kathmandu or Saga.

Bathroom facilities are usually shared, with both Western-style and squat toilets depending on the guesthouse. Hot showers are generally not available, or may be available only for an additional charge when water supply allows. Electricity is limited but usually available during the evening for charging mobile phones and camera batteries. Wi-Fi is generally unavailable, allowing guests to fully appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of this sacred place.

After dinner, many travellers choose to spend time outside admiring the extraordinary night sky above Lake Manasarovar. Because of the high altitude, dry climate, and almost complete absence of light pollution, millions of stars are visible on clear nights. The Milky Way often stretches brightly across the sky, creating an unforgettable experience before you retire for the night.

As tomorrow you will travel to Darchen and begin the sacred Mount Kailash Kora, an early night's rest is highly recommended. Sleeping at this altitude also helps your body continue adapting to the thin mountain air before the trekking begins.

Lake Manasarovar (4,590 m) to Darchen (4,675 m) – Preparation Day Before Mount Kailash Kora

After a peaceful night beside the sacred Lake Manasarovar, you will wake up early to experience the magical atmosphere of this holy place. The early morning light slowly touches the turquoise waters of the lake, while the reflection of the surrounding Himalayan mountains creates one of the most beautiful and spiritual landscapes in Tibet.

For thousands of years, Lake Manasarovar has been an important pilgrimage destination for people from different religious traditions. According to Hindu belief, the lake was created by Lord Brahma in his mind before appearing on Earth. The Sanskrit name "Manasarovar" comes from two words: "Manas" meaning mind and "Sarovar" meaning lake, representing the "Lake of the Mind." Pilgrims believe that visiting this sacred lake brings spiritual purification, inner peace, and blessings.

For Tibetan Buddhists, Lake Manasarovar is known as Mapam Yumtso, meaning the "Victorious Lake." It is considered a sacred place connected with Buddhist teachings, meditation, and enlightenment. The lake is also respected by followers of Jainism and the ancient Bon religion, making it one of the most spiritually significant places in the Himalayan region.

After breakfast, you may have some peaceful time near the lakeshore for meditation, photography, prayer, or simply enjoying the incredible views of the sacred landscape. Depending on local conditions and regulations, pilgrims may perform traditional rituals or collect a small amount of holy lake water to take home.

Later, you will begin the short drive to Darchen, the base camp and starting point for the sacred Mount Kailash Kora (circumambulation). The road follows the western shore of Lake Manasarovar, offering magnificent views of the lake, surrounding mountains, and the dramatic Tibetan wilderness.

On the way, you may visit Chiu Monastery, a famous Buddhist monastery located on a small hill overlooking Lake Manasarovar. This ancient monastery provides one of the most spectacular viewpoints of the entire lake. The peaceful location, prayer flags moving in the mountain wind, and panoramic views of the Himalayas create a deeply memorable experience.

As you approach Darchen, the mighty presence of Mount Kailash (6,638 m) becomes more powerful. Darchen is a small Tibetan settlement located at the foot of this sacred mountain and is the starting point for thousands of pilgrims every year. Before beginning the Kailash Kora, travellers from around the world gather here to prepare physically and spiritually for the three-day trek around the holy mountain.

Darchen is not just a starting point for trekking; it has great religious importance. In Tibetan Buddhism, Mount Kailash is known as Kang Rinpoche, meaning "Precious Snow Mountain." It is believed to be the home of the deity Chakrasamvara and a place of powerful spiritual energy. Hindus consider it the sacred home of Lord Shiva, where the god of transformation and meditation resides.

After arriving in Darchen, our Nepal Voyage Treks team will assist you with final preparations for the Kailash Kora. Your guide will check your trekking equipment, explain the route, discuss altitude safety, and organize porters or support arrangements if required. This is the final opportunity to prepare your backpack before entering the remote mountain trail.

Tonight, you will stay in a comfortable local hotel or pilgrim guesthouse in Darchen. Compared with the basic accommodation near Lake Manasarovar, Darchen offers slightly better facilities because it is a major pilgrimage center. However, guests should still remember that this is a remote high-altitude Tibetan town, and accommodation remains simple compared with normal city hotels.

Rooms are generally provided on a twin-sharing basis. Each room usually has two beds, warm blankets, and basic furniture. Some hotels provide private bathrooms with hot showers, while others may have shared bathroom facilities depending on availability and season.

Electricity is normally available for charging phones, cameras, and batteries. Wi-Fi may be available in some hotels, but the connection is often slow and unreliable due to the remote location. Heating facilities vary; some hotels provide electric blankets or heating systems during cold seasons.

A comfortable night's sleep in Darchen is extremely important because tomorrow you will begin the first day of the sacred Kailash Kora. Your body needs enough rest before the challenging trek toward Dirapuk.

Darchen (4,675 m) – Yam Dwar – Trek to Dirapuk (4,900 m)

First Day of Mount Kailash Kora (Sacred Circumambulation)

Today is one of the most important and emotional days of the entire Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar pilgrimage. After breakfast in Darchen, you will begin the sacred Mount Kailash Kora, a spiritual journey around the holy mountain that has attracted pilgrims from Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon religion for thousands of years.

The morning begins with a short drive from Darchen to Tarboché (Yam Dwar), the official starting point of the Kailash Kora. Yam Dwar means the "Gate of the God of Death" in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Pilgrims believe that passing through this sacred gate represents leaving behind negative energy, past mistakes, and worldly attachments before beginning a new spiritual journey around Mount Kailash.

At Yam Dwar, you will see colourful prayer flags, mani stones engraved with sacred mantras, and pilgrims from different countries preparing for their journey. Many travellers spend a few peaceful moments here offering prayers, taking photographs, and seeking blessings before starting the trek.

From Yam Dwar, the trail enters the beautiful Lha Chu Valley, following the river that flows from the glaciers of Mount Kailash. The first day of the Kora is considered the easiest walking day, allowing your body to adjust before the challenging crossing of Dolma La Pass (5,630 m) tomorrow.

The trail gradually follows a wide valley surrounded by dramatic Himalayan scenery. As you walk, the magnificent western and northern faces of Mount Kailash (6,638 m) slowly appear, creating one of the most unforgettable mountain views in the world. Unlike normal trekking destinations, Mount Kailash is not climbed; instead, pilgrims walk around it with deep respect and devotion.

The landscape today is a perfect example of the high Tibetan Plateau. You will walk through dry alpine valleys, rocky landscapes, glacial streams, and open mountain terrain. The contrast between the dark cliffs of Mount Kailash, white snowfields, blue skies, and colourful prayer flags creates a truly magical atmosphere.

During the trek, you may meet Tibetan pilgrims performing full-body prostrations around the entire Kora route. This ancient practice demonstrates extraordinary devotion and spiritual dedication. You may also see monks, local Tibetan people, and international pilgrims walking together around the sacred mountain.

The trail condition is generally moderate. The path consists of rocky sections, sandy areas, and gradual uphill walking. There are no technical climbing sections, but the high altitude makes even normal walking physically demanding. Our experienced guides will maintain a comfortable pace, allowing enough time for rest, hydration, and enjoying the scenery.

After approximately 12 kilometres of trekking, you will reach Dirapuk (also called Diraphuk), located near the northern face of Mount Kailash. This is one of the most spectacular overnight locations of the entire journey. From Dirapuk, you will have an incredible view of the massive north face of Mount Kailash rising dramatically above the valley.

The evening at Dirapuk is a special experience. As the sun sets behind the Himalayan mountains, the colours of Mount Kailash change from golden to orange and finally silver under the moonlight. Many pilgrims spend quiet moments praying, meditating, or simply enjoying the powerful atmosphere of this sacred place.

Tonight, you will stay in a basic pilgrim guesthouse near Dirapuk. Because this area is remote and located at nearly 5,000 metres, accommodation is simple but provides the necessary facilities for trekkers. Rooms are generally shared, and all guests should be prepared for basic mountain conditions.

The guesthouse usually provides:

  • Twin-sharing or multi-sharing rooms
  • Basic beds or sleeping platforms
  • Warm blankets
  • Pillow and mattress
  • Shared dining area
  • Simple vegetarian and Tibetan meals

Private rooms are generally not available due to the limited facilities in this remote area. Bathroom facilities are shared and basic. Hot showers are normally unavailable. Electricity is limited and may only be available for a short time in the evening for charging mobile phones and cameras (additional cost may apply).

A good sleeping bag is highly recommended for this night because temperatures can drop below freezing. Despite the simple accommodation, spending the night beneath the sacred north face of Mount Kailash is one of the most memorable experiences of the entire pilgrimage.

Dirapuk (4,900 m) – Dolma La Pass (5,630 m) – Zuthulpuk (4,790 m)

The Most Challenging and Spiritual Day of Mount Kailash Kora

Today is the most demanding and spiritually significant day of the entire Mount Kailash Kora. The journey takes you across the famous Dolma La Pass (5,630 m / 18,471 ft), the highest point of the pilgrimage route and a place considered extremely sacred by Tibetan Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, and followers of the Bon religion.

After an early breakfast at Dirapuk guesthouse, you will begin trekking through the high mountain valley. It is important to start slowly and maintain a steady pace because of the extreme altitude. At over 5,000 metres, the air contains much less oxygen than at sea level, and even simple walking requires patience and proper acclimatization.

The trail gradually climbs from Dirapuk toward the eastern side of Mount Kailash. During the morning walk, you will enjoy magnificent views of the north face of Mount Kailash, which appears increasingly dramatic as you gain elevation. The massive black rock walls, snow-covered summit, and surrounding glaciers create a powerful and unforgettable Himalayan panorama.

As you continue upward, the landscape becomes more rugged and remote. The trail passes through rocky slopes, frozen streams, moraine fields, and high-altitude desert terrain. The environment is harsh, yet incredibly beautiful, with colourful prayer flags moving in the mountain wind and thousands of mani stones placed by devoted pilgrims.

After several hours of challenging ascent, you will reach Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest point of the Kailash Kora. This sacred pass is named after Dolma (Tara), a female Buddhist deity representing compassion, protection, and liberation from suffering.

For Tibetan Buddhists, crossing Dolma La symbolizes leaving behind old suffering and beginning a renewed spiritual life. Pilgrims often place prayer flags, offer prayers, and leave small symbolic offerings at the pass. The entire area is filled with colourful flags carrying sacred mantras that move with the wind, spreading blessings across the mountains.

Near the pass lies the sacred Gauri Kund (6,000 m approximately), also known as the "Lake of Compassion." According to Hindu tradition, Gauri Kund is associated with Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. Many Hindu pilgrims consider this lake extremely holy and believe it has a deep spiritual connection with Mount Kailash.

After crossing Dolma La, the trail descends steeply toward the valley below. The descent requires careful walking because the path can be slippery with loose rocks, snow, and ice depending on the season. Our guides will assist guests and maintain a safe pace throughout the descent.

The trail gradually becomes easier as you enter the beautiful Zuthulpuk Valley. The landscape changes from rocky high mountain terrain into a peaceful valley surrounded by cliffs, streams, and alpine scenery. Along the way, you may see pilgrims resting, praying, or continuing their spiritual journey around the sacred mountain.

By late afternoon, you will arrive at Zuthulpuk, named after the famous Zuthulpuk Monastery, which is connected with the great Tibetan Buddhist master Milarepa. According to Tibetan Buddhist history, Milarepa meditated in a cave here, and the monastery remains an important spiritual site for pilgrims.

Tonight, you will stay in a simple pilgrim guesthouse near Zuthulpuk Monastery. Similar to Dirapuk, accommodation is basic because this is a remote mountain area. The focus is not luxury but the unique experience of staying in the sacred landscape of Mount Kailash.

Rooms are usually arranged in shared accommodation with mattresses, pillows, and warm blankets provided. Private rooms are generally not available. Bathroom facilities are shared and basic. Hot showers are normally unavailable, and electricity is limited. Guests should use power banks for cameras and mobile phones.

Although the accommodation is simple, the peaceful atmosphere of Zuthulpuk makes it a memorable overnight experience. After completing the most difficult section of the Kora, guests can relax, enjoy a warm meal, and reflect on the incredible journey around one of the world's most sacred mountains.

Zuthulpuk (4,790 m) – Complete Mount Kailash Kora – Darchen (4,675 m) – Drive to Saga (4,640 m)

Completion of the Sacred 52 km Mount Kailash Circumambulation

Today marks the completion of the sacred Mount Kailash Kora, one of the most meaningful spiritual journeys in the Himalayan region. After two challenging days of trekking through the remote valleys of Mount Kailash, you will complete the final section of the pilgrimage route and return to Darchen, where your vehicle will be waiting to continue the journey back across the Tibetan Plateau.

After breakfast at the Zuthulpuk guesthouse, you will begin the final walking section of the Kora. Compared with yesterday's difficult crossing of Dolma La Pass, today's trail is relatively easier, with a gradual descent through the beautiful Zuthulpuk Valley. The path follows the river valley through open landscapes, rocky cliffs, and peaceful mountain surroundings.

During the morning walk, you will have time to reflect on the spiritual experience of completing the sacred circuit around Mount Kailash. For thousands of years, pilgrims have walked this same route believing that the journey brings purification, blessings, and a deeper connection with nature and spirituality.

The final section of the trail passes through a wide valley surrounded by the magnificent scenery of western Tibet. You will see colourful prayer flags, ancient mani stone walls, small meditation caves, and places where pilgrims stop for prayers. The peaceful atmosphere and dramatic mountain views create a memorable ending to your Kailash Kora.

After approximately 8 kilometres of trekking, you will reach the endpoint of the Kora near Darchen. Completing the full 52-kilometre circumambulation of Mount Kailash is considered a great spiritual achievement. Many pilgrims celebrate this moment with gratitude and happiness after completing their journey around the sacred mountain.

Your Nepal Voyage Treks team will welcome you back at Darchen, where you will have time to rest, refresh, and enjoy lunch before continuing by private vehicle toward Saga.

The drive from Darchen to Saga takes you once again across the magnificent Tibetan Plateau. The route passes through vast open plains, high-altitude deserts, mountain valleys, and remote Tibetan settlements. Although the landscape may appear empty, this region has a unique beauty created by endless skies, colourful mountains, sacred lakes, and traditional nomadic life.

During the drive, you may see Tibetan nomads with their yak herds, traditional black tents, and animals grazing freely across the plateau. Depending on weather and season, wildlife such as wild yaks, kiang, blue sheep, Tibetan gazelles, and Himalayan birds may be spotted along the route.

The road is mostly paved, although some sections may be affected by seasonal maintenance. Our experienced driver will ensure a safe and comfortable journey, with regular breaks for photography, refreshments, and rest.

After approximately 470 kilometres and 8–9 hours of driving, you will arrive in Saga, where you will check into a comfortable hotel. After several nights in basic mountain guesthouses, staying in Saga provides a welcome opportunity to enjoy a proper shower, comfortable bed, and better facilities.

Tonight, you will stay in a comfortable hotel in Saga. Rooms are normally arranged on a twin-sharing basis with private bathrooms. Hot showers, electricity, charging facilities, and Wi-Fi are generally available. This comfortable rest is important after completing the challenging Kailash Kora.

Drive from Saga (4,640 m) to Kerung Border – Cross into Nepal – Syabrubesi (1,550 m)

Farewell to Tibet and Return to Nepal

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Saga, you will begin your return journey toward the Nepal–China border. Although today's drive is long, it is one of the most scenic sections of the tour, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau one last time before crossing back into Nepal.

Leaving Saga behind, your journey follows the Friendship Highway through wide open valleys, rolling grasslands, and high mountain passes. As the road winds through western Tibet, you will once again witness the unique beauty of the plateau, where endless blue skies meet snow-covered Himalayan peaks. Along the route, large herds of yaks, Tibetan sheep, goats, and wild horses can often be seen grazing peacefully across the vast alpine plains. Traditional Tibetan nomads continue their centuries-old lifestyle in black yak-hair tents, creating a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Tibet.

The drive gradually descends toward Kerung (Gyirong), passing dramatic mountain landscapes, crystal-clear rivers, deep gorges, and beautiful forested valleys. Compared with the dry plateau, the Gyirong Valley is greener and more fertile, with pine forests, waterfalls, and colourful wildflowers adding to the natural beauty. During the journey, there will be several stops for photography, refreshments, and short breaks while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan range.

After approximately 6–7 hours of driving, you will arrive at the Kerung Border. Here, your Tibetan guide will assist you with the Chinese exit formalities before saying farewell. After completing immigration and customs procedures, you will cross the Friendship Bridge on foot back into Nepal, where your Nepal Voyage Treks guide and driver will warmly welcome you.

From the Nepal border, your private vehicle will continue to Syabrubesi, a charming mountain town in the Rasuwa District. The short drive follows the beautiful Bhote Koshi River through lush forests and traditional Tamang villages before reaching your overnight destination.

After several days at high altitude, arriving back in Nepal often feels refreshing. The lower elevation provides more oxygen, warmer temperatures, and greener landscapes. Many travellers immediately notice the fresh mountain air and comfortable climate, making it easier to relax after the demanding pilgrimage around Mount Kailash.

Upon arrival in Syabrubesi, you will check into a comfortable mountain lodge. Compared with the basic guesthouses used during the Kailash Kora, the lodges in Syabrubesi provide a more comfortable environment with private or attached bathrooms in many rooms, hot showers, and a variety of freshly prepared Nepali and international meals.

In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner while celebrating the successful completion of your Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar pilgrimage with your fellow travellers and guides. This is a wonderful opportunity to share memories, photographs, and unforgettable experiences from one of the world's most sacred journeys.
