This is a full sightseeing and preparation day in Kathmandu. The tour introduces international clients to Nepal’s history, architecture, religion and living cultural traditions before the expedition begins.
Kathmandu Durbar Square
Kathmandu Durbar Square, historically known as Hanuman Dhoka, was the royal palace complex of the Kathmandu Kingdom and an important centre of Nepalese political and cultural history. The square contains traditional courtyards, temples, palace buildings, carved wooden windows and examples of Newar architecture. It reflects the artistic and religious development of the Kathmandu Valley under successive Malla and Shah rulers.
Swayambhunath Stupa
Swayambhunath, often called the Monkey Temple, is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Nepal. Located on a hill overlooking Kathmandu Valley, it is associated with ancient Buddhist traditions and is surrounded by prayer flags, shrines, monasteries and religious artwork. The hilltop provides broad views across Kathmandu when the weather is clear.
Pashupatinath Temple
Pashupatinath is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex stands beside the Bagmati River and includes shrines, ghats, monasteries and traditional religious spaces. Non-Hindu visitors can observe the cultural and architectural surroundings from designated areas.
Boudhanath Stupa
Boudhanath is one of the largest and most important Buddhist stupas in Nepal. It has long been associated with Tibetan Buddhism, pilgrimage, monasteries and Himalayan trade routes. The surrounding area is a major centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture, with prayer wheels, monasteries, traditional shops and restaurants.
Patan Durbar Square
Patan, also known as Lalitpur, is famous for its exceptional metalwork, stone carving, temples and traditional Newar craftsmanship. Patan Durbar Square demonstrates the artistic achievements of the Malla period and remains one of the most important cultural and architectural areas in the Kathmandu Valley.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square
Bhaktapur is a historic city known for its preserved medieval urban character, brick-paved streets, palace courtyards, pagoda temples, pottery traditions and woodcarving. Bhaktapur Durbar Square offers an outstanding introduction to the history and craftsmanship of the Kathmandu Valley.
The Kathmandu Valley’s major heritage zones are internationally recognized for their cultural, architectural and religious importance. The sightseeing day also allows the expedition team to check passports, permits, insurance documents, climbing equipment and personal gear.
